Ear Infection

Boy toddler, symbolising that ear infections are common in young children

The middle ear can become infected as a result of  an upper respiratory tract infection, cold or flu. A middle ear infection is particularly common in young children. It can cause considerable pain and a temporary mild hearing loss.

The outer ear can also become infected, however it will only affect hearing if the canal blocks with swelling or discharge.

If there is any sign of ear infection in or around the ear, it is important to see your local doctor.
